Rustic Furniture built to last a lifetime.
These American Hornbeam frame furniture with Hickory Bark Seats will become an
heirloom for your family.
Log furniture type settees made with the American Hornbeam locally
harvested in central West Virginia by the artist. The bark is retained on the
wood by means of the harvest and the dense characteristics provides for a glassy
finish that is smooth and inviting to touch.
MAINTAINING
YOUR BARK SEAT
Is as easy as it gets, Tammy puts a light coat of mineral oil on the seats to retain
some moisture. This makes for easy clean up with a damp cloth. You can reapply
oil as desired. Once a year is ideal, however no maintenance is required to keep
your chair or stool looking beautiful for generations.
Artist Statement
"I
have always enjoyed making something from natural materials. Since apprenticing
in rustic furniture I have enjoyed exploring and experimenting with my own
designs. Each piece is
unique and intended to stir feelings. I am inspired by the wood and wish to
project the natural beauty of it by arranging pieces in a way that would seem
to have grown that way or intended that way.
"
"Practicing greenwood joinery
allows me to build a piece of
furniture without the use of any hardware. These joints are made to last a
lifetime and then some. The seating is Hickory bark and done again without any
hardware. This traditional seating material has been known to last one hundred years or
more. I harvest my own American Hornbeam and Hickory bark, giving me a unique opportunity
to connect with nature."
"When viewing a piece of my furniture you are reminded of nature, the legs
seem to be rooted and alive. The feel of the wood is smooth and inviting. The tops of the legs
reveal the growth rings of the tree and are sanded incredibly smooth, and are
fascinating and inviting to touch. The muscle-like look and feel reflects strength and
dignity of each piece."
"I enjoy creating
furniture that have special functions, such as fishing
stools, key holder stools and chairs with hidden compartments. I am developing
new designs from inspiration I get from looking at a tree that is screaming to
become something new."
